The reason I like chalk lines especially with 3tab is that one roof's that roll, and sag, the shingles tend to follow the contour, chalking lines straightens out the rows in those cases and keep things nice and straight whether or not the roof wants it to. Also I don’t trust the offset cut they put on the shingle in the factory, so I use a double line for my offset, first line at the distance of a whole shingle, the second whatever the offset is back.
